Review: The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

I’m ready for fall and the witchy romance books to pour in. And the idea of an accidental curse? The Ex Hex is a charming romance about second chances with a flair of the supernatural. Keep reading this book review for my full thoughts.

Summary

Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones nursed her broken heart like any young witch would: vodka, weepy music, bubble baths…and a curse on the horrible boyfriend. Sure, Vivi knows she shouldn’t use her magic this way, but with only an “orchard hayride” scented candle on hand, she isn’t worried it will cause him anything more than a bad hair day or two.

That is until Rhys Penhallow, descendent of the town’s ancestors, breaker of hearts, and annoyingly just as gorgeous as he always was, returns to Graves Glen, Georgia. What should be a quick trip to recharge the town’s ley lines and make an appearance at the annual fall festival turns disastrously wrong. With one calamity after another striking Rhys, Vivi realizes her silly little Ex Hex may not have been so harmless after all.

Suddenly, Graves Glen is under attack from murderous wind-up toys, a pissed off ghost, and a talking cat with some interesting things to say. Vivi and Rhys have to ignore their off the charts chemistry to work together to save the town and find a way to break the break-up curse before it’s too late.

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from Netgalley. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

Second chance romance is becoming one of my favorite tropes. The Ex Hex is a story of magic gone awry and making our own fate. It’s full of charming chemistry, like magnets being drawn together. Full of spells, The Ex Hex delivers this mix of being forced to work with our ex and confronting our past. How so often our past relationships end up also exposing pieces of ourselves, fears, insecurities, and doubts. In big and small ways, The Ex Hex is about exploring and making amends with the past.

That we can make our own way, speak up for ourselves, and change the ending. While I enjoyed the witchy vibes and chemistry between Vivi and Rhys, I was missing a piece to really sink into the characters – especially Rhys. Like, maybe it’s just me, but I didn’t really understand his character or like the issues he was working through. I wanted to, especially because I thought Vivi was so charming. But in general, I felt like his character – on his own – was a bit lackluster.

If you are searching for a light, autumnal witchy romance, The Ex Hex may still be for you! I just wasn’t as drawn to Rhy as I wanted! Find The Ex Hex on Goodreads, Amazon, Indiebound, Bookshop.org & The Book Depository.

What’s the last book where you weren’t sure how you felt about the love interest?
